Diasporic Ecologies

2022-ongoing
Installation, dried plants and seeds, stones, woods, sand and glass, variable Teatrino Malaspina (Mulazzo, Italy)

On the floor, under the high vaulted space of the teatrino, we encounter botanical geographies in Diasporic Ecologies, composed of islands made of dried plants and roots that appear to have grown from rocks and dried in the sun over time. The sand that connects them comes from the banks of the Po river (Italy) and subtly outlines the constellation of the artist’s zodiac sign, Virgo. Each plant island corresponds to a star and most contain seeds that may still be planted, opening up his narration to a multitude of possible paths. His own coined term, Economadism, sums up an extensive research on migration of plants typical of Asian vegetation such as artemisia, lotus, and soy, encompassing both human - driven movements and the natural dispersal of plants and seeds. With this word he intends “the study of the environmental, cultural, anthropological, and psychological conditions of the nomadic state of the human subject, considered in transition from a unitary, homogeneous, and controllable dimension to one that is fluid, evolving, and hybrid”.
